2001 Lionheart was a 2.5D RPG . All art was created in 3D and rendered into 2D sprite sheets. The sprites would be layered up to create an environment. Players would never see the entire map but, instead played at a zoomed in 800x600 window, which was standard resolution for a PC game at the time. This was before ambient occlusion or any kind of real time lighting was possible so, the environment feels kind of flat.
